## Designed for elimination, not selection

The most important thing while implementing the pre-employment Abstract Reasoning Test in your hiring process is that it is an elimination tool, not a selection tool. In other words: you want to use the test to eliminate the candidates who do poorly on the test, not to select the candidates who come out at the top. While they are super valuable, pre-employment tests do not paint the entire picture of a candidate’s abilities, knowledge, and motivations. Multiple easy questions are more predictive of a candidate's ability than fewer hard questions. Harder questions are often "trick" based questions, which do not provide any meaningful signal about the candidate's skillset.

### What type of questions will the abstract reasoning test include?

Abstract reasoning tests, also called inductive reasoning tests are non-verbal tests, which typically do not require candidates to analyse verbal or numerical information. They are designed to eliminate the bias of cultural background, education and language.

The questions will focus on measuring a candidate's ability to:

• Identify the rule, association or pattern in sets of objects to find a missing object.
• Interpret the clockwise or counterclockwise rotation of shapes/objects.
• Choose which of several figures doesn’t follow the pattern.
